Yellow tungsten oxide, that is, tungsten trioxide, can be used to prepare an electrochromic thin film and then be used to assemble an electrochromic smart window, including an all-solid-state electrochromic window and a semi-solid electrochromic window.

Experts said that in the all-solid-state electrochromic window structure, five layers of film including a transparent conductive film TC1, an electrochromic film EC, an ion conductor film IC, an ion storage film IS and a transparent conductive film TC2, are deposited in the same glass substrate, as shown in Figure (a). In a semi-solid electrochromic window structure, two glass substrates are typically used because of the need to encapsulate the liquid. A glass substrate is plated with a TC film and an EC film, and the other glass substrate is plated with a TC film and a CE film, and then a liquid or gel plasma conductor material is sandwiched between the two coated substrates, and then encapsulated with a sealing material in a whole, as shown in Figure (b).
